OR Tambo International Airport

Investigators informed Lieutenant General Khumalo of a warrant for his arrest at ORTIA and requested him to hand himself over, with warrants also sought for his co-accused at Brooklyn SAPS.

“The investigators went to OR TIA to inform General Khumalo that there was a warrant for his arrest and for him to hand himself over. They had a warrant of arrest for him. Warrants of arrest had also been sought and obtained for his co-accused before they were requested to hand themselves over at the Brooklyn SAPS.”

Lieutenant General Khumalo cooperated with investigators at ORTIA and was taken to Brooklyn Police Station without incident, accompanied by his security detail and treated respectfully.

“Upon finding him at OR TIA, the two investigators explained who they were, why they were there, why he was sought, and what his rights were. They then asked Lieutenant General S D Khumalo to accompany them to Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria. He cooperated and was taken there. There was nothing dramatic about it. At all times during his arrest, Lieutenant General Khumalo's security detail was with him. He was not threatened and was accorded all the respect that could be accorded a person of his profile. On the way from OR TIA to Brooklyn Police Station, the investigators had occasion to stop and get something to drink from a filling station at the request of Lieutenant General Khumalo for himself.”

Chief Mashaba personally went to OR Tambo International Airport to find Khensani and investigate stolen items.

“you actually went to the airport yourself ... You were not forwarding this information that Mr Nku gives you ... You actually went to the airport yourself”

Chief Mashaba was introducing Mr Nku to Gauza and others at OR Tambo Airport for assistance regarding stolen dollars at the airport.

“I think it was maybe introducing him to Gauza and them ... For him because he needed assistance. There is dollars that got stolen at the airport.”

There was an incident of stolen money (dollars) at OR Tambo Airport in February 2019 involving Mr Nku's bosses and efforts to recover the stolen gold or platinum.

“do they get stolen twice ? ... basically put up a team to go recover stolen gold or stolen platinum on behalf of Nku's bosses?”

Chief Mashaba denies putting up a team himself but requested assistance from others who work at the airport to recover stolen items.

“I do not put up a team. I ask if they can assist ... They will go because they work there. I do not work there.”

Main trafficking hubs in South Africa include Durban Harbour, OR Tambo International Airport, and Lebombo Port of Entry. Bulk imports mostly occur via Durban Harbour. Smuggling via OR Tambo is mainly by drug mules carrying drugs on their person or in body cavities, while bulk trafficking through shipping containers is conducted by sophisticated syndicates. Smaller harbours are used to a lesser extent.

The smuggling via OR Tambo International Airport is primarily by way of people referred to as drug mules who would smuggle the drugs in their luggage or on their person, such as in body cavities. Bulk trafficking through shipping containers is usually undertaken by sophisticated syndicates. Commissioners, I can also just mention here that except for these harbours, the Western Cape, Cape Town Harbour, Saldanha Harbour, as well as harbours, smaller harbours towards Port Elizabeth and so forth, are all being used to a lesser extent although for these smuggling and trafficking activities.”
