Commissioner Khumalo is concerned about the specifics of Mr Carrim's travel from the North West to Cape Town and requests detail on flight bookings and travel arrangements.

“In his presentation, Mr Chaskalson said they have information that he has been travelling from the North West... So unless he drove to Cape Town, I am assuming he would have flown from either OR Tambo or the other airport... If you can give instructions to anybody to book flights for you, then you can give instructions to those who are running the business to provide the detail the Commission is looking for.”

The witness was involved in operations at OR Tambo airport where police officers were paid by Mr Nku to use their positions unlawfully.

“you involved other police officers in those activities and that they were paid by Mr Nku”

Chief Mashaba was involved in an operation in OR Tambo in 2019, but jurisdictional limitations applied.

“Like I said , in the province , we do not have jurisdiction ...”

Chief Mashaba confirms that OR Tambo is an airport and that police operations, including traffic officers giving tickets, do occur there but not inside the terminal building.

The group involved in the 2019 operation at OR Tambo, paid by Mr Nku, was not an official police operation and members did not perform official police functions but were involved in planned arrests relating to stolen gold.

“which we have established is not an official police operation, because these three people who are your team that are paid by Nku, they are not in a police operation to follow up on this”

Chief Mashaba admits he was at the airport assisting Mr Nku and introducing the group to Nku but denies participating in the actual operation or arrest.

“I did not participate in that operation. I was at the airport trying to assist Nku and introduce the guys to Nku. It necessarily does not mean I went inside the airport or I was part of the operation.”
