A group of between 5 and 10 people attacked the Forensic Science Laboratory in Pretoria, held security guards and tied them, and one police officer was shot during the incident related to an attempted theft of drugs.

Lieutenant Colonel Sibiya states there was only one security officer at the boom gate of the CHC depot and he did not see any firearms on the security officers present.
“Yes, the security guy at the boom gate next to the main road. Just one security guy at the boom gate. No, I did not see firearms. I do not remember if the security at the gate was armed.”
Warrant Officer Magane testified he was at the scene and that the BMW was not even close; it was not possible for a bag to be taken from the scene and put in the vehicle, with many people and security guards present.
“I was at the scene. It was the space or the distance that was between the scene and the BMW. ... There was no way that one would have carried a bag, take it to that, in the presence of all the people who were there, the security guards and everyone.”
The guards who had been deployed on 31 December 2024 withdrew following Major Phiri's stopping of the deployment.

Absorption of security guards means transferring security personnel from contract services to full city employment.

From 15 April 2021 up to the time the Asset Protection function was moved back to Tshwane Metro Police Department, not much movement happened towards full absorption of security guards.
