Small tears were discovered in some evidence bags when handed over at the Forensic Service Lab, likely caused by multiple movements of the bags from crime scene to Booysens to College to Forensics.

Approximately eight of the evidence bags were affected by this re-sealing process replacing them with new sealed bags with new exhibit numbers.
“And I think there were about eight such bags ... they resealed it and we handed it in”
The exhibits were brought in unsealed black carrier bags rather than in sealed evidence bags, violating proper evidence handling protocols.
“The first red flags that I saw was that these exhibits were not brought in evidence bags. They were not sealed. It was brought in the same black carrier bags that they found it in whatever, wherever the container was that they found it in. It was all put out nicely to take photos on the ground and then it arrived back in my offices still in those same bags, not sealed in evidence bags like it should have been done. It should have been processed by the proper people for DNA, for touch DNA, for fingerprints, all that. These arrived by me just back in those same bags that were seized in. It was completely wrong.”
