Mr Matlala's company CATVIP previously provided security services to the late Jotham Msibi, and their relationship was solely that of rendering security services.
“I place on record that one of my companies, CATVIP, previously provided security services to the late Jotham Msibi. My relationship with him was that of rendering security services.”
Jotham Msibi was a taxi business owner regarded as one of the industry leaders who operated more than 200 taxis, and it is standard practice in the taxi industry for owners of large fleets to require close protection services.

Mr Matlala knew Steven Motsumi through the late Jotham Msibi, they were very close friends, and Matlala had social interactions with Motsumi before asking for the loan.
“I know him because he used to visit Mr Msibi a lot. Him and Mr Msibi were very close friends.”
The witness was sent by Sthembiso Msibi, son of Jotham Msibi, to collect a jet ski from Mr Cat Matlala in Limpopo, who claimed it belonged to his late father Mr Mswazi; a week later Mr Matlala asked about a card and driver's license left in the jet ski's dashboard, which the witness had taken away but could not answer immediately due to busyness.
“I was asked by Sthembiso Msibi, the son of Jotham Msibi, to go and collect the jet ski ... from Mr Cat Matlala ... somewhere in Limpopo as he said jet ski belong to his late father Mr Mswazi ... he phoned me telling me he is looking for the card and the driver's licence that he left in the dash of the jet ski.”
The cases involved taxi violence and multiple murders targeting the Msibi family after Mr Jotham Msibi passed on, leading SANACO Executive Committee to meet then Minister of Police General Bheki Cele to discuss investigations.
“after Mr Jotham passed on , there was a stream of taxi violence or taxi murders in Johannesburg , Pretoria Central . So what transpired ? The SANACO Executive Committee , they then decided to go and meet the then Minister of Police , that is General Bheki Cele , to discuss with him about this matter , that they must be investigated”
