Provincial Investigation Unit

The DPCI is not the only narcotics enforcement team in South Africa; Gauteng also has a Provincial Investigation Unit within SAPS Detectives that investigates narcotics cases, usually focusing on drug labs, but the DPCI is involved in major drug busts.

“There is, I cannot talk for other provinces, but Gauteng also has a Provincial Investigation Unit... part of SAPS Detectives, not DPCI Detectives and they also do indeed deal with narcotic cases... usually when there is major drug busts, the DPCI will in some way, for or fashion, also be involved in that investigation.”

The size of the drug consignment justifies escalating the matter to the Provincial Investigation Unit and involving the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

“If I see the size of the consignment after searching, I would definitely involve the DPCI ... at least to the Provincial Investigation Unit dealing with narcotics”
