Mr O'Sullivan was involved in crime-fighting efforts for 40-50 years, beginning in 1978 when he received an award from Scotland Yard for preventing a crime and arresting a suspect.

Mr O'Sullivan joined the police in 1990 and served for 36 years, voluntarily giving between 60 to 80 hours a month beyond the required 8 hours.
“I joined the police back in 1990 , which is now 36 years ago . I gave of my time freely on a regular basis . Most reservist police officials would put in between 10 eight and 15 or eight and 20 hours a month . You are required to do eight . I regularly did 60 to 80 hours a month”
During the first 10 to 14 years, Mr O'Sullivan made a number of arrests and was shot three times on duty.
“During that first , shall we say , 10 or 12 or 14 years , I made a number of arrests as a police official . In fact , I was shot on duty three times .”
Mr O'Sullivan focused on drug cartels and organised crime regarding corruption during his police career until he was dismissed by then-Commissioner Jackie Selebi.
“I started focussing on drug cartels . I also started focussing on Organised Crime in so far as corruption is concerned . My career in the police came to a rapid end when I was dismissed by then-Commissioner of Police Jackie Selebi”
After leaving the police, Mr O'Sullivan formed a charity called Forensics for Justice focused on fighting corruption within the criminal justice system, financed by himself.

Mr O'Sullivan was a lecturer at the Police Training Centre and simultaneously conducted policing at the airport via a reservist unit he helped form, including members speaking different languages to impact crime at the airport.
“I was also carrying out policing at the airport in the Border Police . So there was a reservist unit at the airport which I helped form , which comprised of about 35 volunteer members , and I selected people that spoke different languages so that we could have some impact on the crimes that were taking place at the airport . But during the period in question here , I was the head lecturer at the Police Training Centre”
One of Mr O'Sullivan's students during his lecturer time was Cyril Ramaphosa, now President of South Africa.
“one of my students was the now President of South Africa , Cyril Ramaphosa”
Mr O'Sullivan was never a police officer in the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“you were never a police officer in the SAP or SAPS ? Correct.”
Mr O'Sullivan served with the United Nations Police, seconded from the British Government, and later to the BSAP in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).
“I was working for the British Government , I was seconded to the United Nations Police , and ultimately I ended up being seconded for a period to the BSAP, which was the police in what was then called Rhodesia , is now called Zimbabwe”
Penetration of the criminal justice system by organised crime is not new; it has been ongoing for many years before the 2025 public revelations by General Mkhwanazi.

Penetration of organised crime into the criminal justice system has been going on for a long time, not just recently highlighted by General Mkhwanazi in 2025.
“Actually , it has been going on for donkey's years . And to have it suddenly thrust into the public eye on the 6th of July last year”
