General Mkhwanazi interfered with IPID and tried to get IPID members to leave and provide dirt on Robert McBride and the speaker related to the Phahlane investigation.

Mr O'Sullivan says the interference related to General Mkhwanazi's approach in the Phahlane case is not evident in the affidavit he sees.
“You cannot see that in that statement... You would have to be involved on the ground at the time... All of this was going on at the same time as the Phahlane investigation”
General Mkhwanazi called a dramatic media briefing on July 6th last year about interference in investigations, and was accused of interfering in the Phahlane investigation.
“On the 6th of July last year, General Mkhwanazi calls a media briefing... he talks about interference in investigations... that is exactly what he was doing in the Phahlane investigation”
Mr O'Sullivan states the affidavit Mr Khuba prepared in January 2026 makes no mention of General Mkhwanazi interfering in the Phahlane investigation.
“As recent as January 2026... he prepares an affidavit... he does not say anything about General Mkhwanazi approaching him to interfere in the Phahlane investigation”
Mr O'Sullivan states documents alone do not amount to evidence of interference; they must be read with court cases where IPID successfully stopped police interference in the investigation into Phahlane.
“The documents themselves would not amount to evidence on their own of the interference... they would have to be read together with the High Court cases... where IPID launched urgent application to stop police interference in their investigation into Phahlane”
The speaker had no involvement other than the Phahlane investigation concerning Robert McBride, and it is hard to draw a conclusion from the available evidence about interference by Mkhwanazi.
“My only involvement with Robert McBride at that moment in time was the Phahlane investigation... so it is hard to draw that conclusion”
