Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977

There is a perception or confusion that a Traffic Officer cannot do law enforcement, but Chief Mashaba states they have the authority and power to fight crime as peace officers under the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977.

“a Traffic Officer is a Policeman specializing in roads ... what gives us the authority and power, it is the Act now as law enforcement officials and peace officers that we also have a mandate to fight crime . So I think that what gives us the power and the authority to, from time to time, work with the Police in fighting crime .”
