Commissioner Mkhwanazi states that his grandmother won him in a court of law after a dispute over custody following his parents' divorce.

“The unfortunate part is that the story that I got from my grandmother, my father confirmed that they won me in the 10 court of law. There was a dispute between both sides, I think when they were divorced, that is why they took over you see.”

Commissioner Mkhwanazi was raised by his grandmother after his mother separated from his father, and only received his birth certificate when he had an ID, accompanied by his grandmother.

“And I was accompanied by my grandmother to get that ID because she raised me up until the stepmother came in.”
