The police report about Mr Sithole, a known taxi boss shot and killed in Soshanguve, was already publicly available on Facebook by the time Sergeant Nkosi circulated it to Mr Mampane.
“And I still confirm that event though it looks like a , indeed it is a police report , but by the time I sent it , it was all over the news . ... And with the same format that it is like that , it was circulating on Facebook . ... That is correct .”
Sergeant Nkosi knew before forwarding messages to Mr Matlala that Mr Matlala already knew about the contract termination from social media like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok.
“Mr Matlala responded, he said he already saw that on Facebook or on Instagram. ... Or TikTok was what you said first time.”
Sergeant Nkosi learned that the contract termination news was circulating on Facebook before General Sibiya sent official documents confirming it.
“actually, General Sibiya was sending me old news because I knew. ... Facebook”
Sergeant Nkosi did not trust the news seen on Facebook about the contract termination until confirmation from General Sibiya was received.
“Facebook has got a lot of false stories, so I could not run with something that is not even confirmed or verified. So when General Sibiya sent me, then I realized, oh, that means that thing of the Facebook is ...”
Sergeant Nkosi confirms that before General Sibiya sent confirmation, Mr Matlala only had social media as a source and could not rely on its accuracy to know contract status.
“before Mr Matlala gets this message from you, all he can depend on for his source of information is TikTok and Facebook. And he, like you, must know that there is a possibility of fake news on TikTok and Facebook.”
