Mr Bateman received a WhatsApp message from a source on 3 July 2018 sending an audio clip regarding an incident between General Khan and Brigadier Petley involving assault and intimidation.

“Mr Bateman's message ... What is this about ? ... A n d h i s m e s s a g e i s : A General Khan and Brig Petley ... A n incident between them . He allegedly also assaulted her with a pen . Case was opened , assault and intimidation .”

Mr. Nku left Johannesburg for Durban primarily to follow up on his source related to containers, because his usual contact stopped communicating and the source would not exchange information on telephone.

“the main reasons was one of my sources ... did not want to exchange information on any telephonic platform ... the person that I'd been calling throughout was no longer picking up my calls ... I was left to follow up on the information on my own”

Sources give information to the police through a process including source claims that are documented and rewarded upon recovery and conviction, but may lose interest as their role is intelligence.

“A source gave certain information to the police, so a source claim would then be submitted through their processes. The source claim would have to come to me, because I would have to put a copy of this docket with it to show how the source gave the information or validated that source information. So they would then have an understanding of what I have done with the exhibits because the source gets rewarded on a recovery. The source gets rewarded on a recovery and then a conviction. So at a certain point, they might lose interest in the docket because their intention is intelligence.”
