Warrant Officer Magane failed to call all relevant units like LCRC, SANEB, Dog Unit, Forensic Lab, VISPOL, and Booysens to the crime scene during the drug bust operation.
“You did not call LCRC, you did not call SANEB, you did not call Dog Unit ... You did not try to call the Forensic Lab, you did not call VISPOL, you did not call Booysens, you did not call anyone that is relevant.”
The forensic lab lacked storage space due to the large number of exhibits stored and the extended retention times required by legislation.
“There is just no space . Literally , there is no space . Exhibits being stored there and it also reverts back to the prior thing that I said in terms of the legislation where we currently have to keep exhibits for way too long and one runs out of space .”
There is only one main forensic laboratory in Pretoria in Gauteng, one in Cape Town, and the one in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) was damaged by serious flood damage and thus not operational.
“In Gauteng , there is one lab in Pretoria . That is the main forensic lab . And I know there is one in Cape Town . There used to be one in KZN as well , but the one in KZN got damaged . It had serious , serious flood damage . So , exhibits at that time were no longer going there .”
