Journalist Ms Marianne Thamm was the victim of a house break-in in March 2021 in which two of her laptops, a personal MacBook Pro, an iPad and jewellery were stolen.

Mr O'Sullivan received a copy of the PowerPoint presentation unexpectedly from a journalist after the media briefing, which allowed him to check the metadata with a forensic tool.
“I would have ever thought that I would receive a copy of that PowerPoint presentation ... I did not even know the media briefing was going on until a journalist phoned me and said this guy is talking about you ... he sent it to me so not realizing I could now check, which I do with a forensic tool, I am able to pull the metadata from that and I thought oh, that is interesting.”
General Sibiya sent Sergeant Nkosi a document on 12 February 2025 containing an email from a journalist querying about alleged relations with kidnapping kingpin Esmael Nangy, and donations received from Nangy.

Lt-Gen Shibiri explains that the person using Khawula's name to extort was usually a journalist pretending to be an intermediary, not Khawula himself.
“The person who was wanted to extort was somebody using the name of Khawula... it was somebody who was acting as an intermediary, and pretending to be a journalist... whom Khawula gave information to publish, whom for him not to publish, he must get something and also Khawula to pay Khawula something.”
