The Crime Intelligence Department has a secret service account with no transparency on spending, and no clean audit report has ever been given.

From 2012 to 2024, the secret services account budget increased from R9.82 million to R600 million per annum, an increase of 512%, without a concomitant decrease in crime.
“In 2012 ..., the budget for these secret services account was R9 820 million per annum. In 2024, it stood at R600 million per annum, which is an increase of 512%, which is five times the rate of inflation over that same period. But what we do not have, is we do not have a concomitant decrease in crime.”
For the last 14 years, successive heads of Crime Intelligence have been arrested and jailed for stealing from the secret services account.
